**New for 2017** Apprenticeship preparatory course (engineering) QQI Level 5


This programme provides learners with the foundation required to pursue an apprenticeship in the engineering trades.  it is the ideal startingpoint to explore the various apprenteceship options available.  Students will gain hands-on experience in preparing for an apprenticeship in their desired trade.

This course is designed to

  • provide participants with a hands on introduction to the broad range of the skills required to work in the construction and engineering industry.
  • Prepare participants for entry to ordinary level degree and honours degree programmes in related fields.

Entry Requirements

  • Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, or equivalent
  • Interview
  • Mature applicants welcome

How the course is taught

Mullingar Community College has developed a style of teaching to meet the needs of a diverse community of learners/

  • A practical based course where learning takes place primarily in workshops and drawing rooms
  • We make extensive use of advanced multimedia and internet technologies to bring subject matter to life and to ensure effective learning

Career opportunities

  • progression to an apprenticeship in the construction or engineering fields
  • students who sucessfully complete the course may gain entry to third level institutions and colleges through the Higher Education Links Scheme

Progression to higher education

Athlone IT

  • higher certificate in Engineering in Civil Engineering, Level 6 and must have 5N1833 or LC Maths

Galway IT

  • ordinary or higher degree in civil, mechanical or energy engineering

This is a full time one-year course and runs from September to May

  • Administration/ Student Services Fee €100
  • DES Programme Participoant Contribution €200 (exemptions for medical card, BTEA, VTOS, Student Grant)
  • QQI Exam Fees €50 (Exemptions for medical card holders)
